On August 15, 1950, Sister Lucy was questioned about the last apparition at Fatima. She said that the Most Holy Virgin appeared to her as Our Lady of Mount Carmel and held the Brown Scapular in her hand.
When asked whether the fact that Our Lady held a Scapular should be considered as a part of the Fatima message, she responded that the wearing of the Scapular was as important as the recitation of the Rosary. She added: “The Holy Father has declared this to the whole world by saying the Scapular is the sign of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This is an indisputable fact. The Rosary and the Scapular are inseparable.”
The Scapular is made of two rectangular pieces of brown woven wool which are linked together by two cords so that it can be worn around the neck. A picture of the Blessed Virgin does not have to appear on the Scapular. The Scapular must be worn constantly (day and night) and can be owrn underneath one’s clothing.
History of the Brown Scapular
On July 16, 1251, Our Lady appeared to the English Carmelite friar, Saint Simon Stock, and gave him the miraculous Brown Scapular saying : “Those who die devoutly clothed in this habit shall be preserved from eternal fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in peril and a pledge of peace and special protection until the end of time.”
Seventy years later, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Pope John XXII and made another promise which is considered a complement of the first: “I, the Mother of grace, shall descend into purgatory on the Saturday after their death and whosoever I shall find in Purgatory I shall free, so that I may lead them unto the holy mountain of life everlasting.”
